Different Types Of Headaches

The International Headache Society has determined that the hundreds of different types of headaches that are commonly reported will actually fall into one of two distinct categories: primary and secondary. In order to create a conservative care for headaches plan, your doctor will need to determine which category the headache you are experiencing actually falls into.

Primary headaches are those that are considered to have only one cause. These include migraines, tension headaches and cluster headaches, the three most common of them all. Secondary headaches, on the other hand are those that are actually caused by another condition, like those experienced by patients who have both neck pain and headaches, due to a physical dislocation or misalignment within the structure of the neck. When another condition is causing the headache, the cause is treated first, the headache last.

Conservative Care Options

It all starts with a thorough physical examination to determine the root cause of the headache. Those that are a result of neck pain, for example, would then be treated with a series of treatments that are designed to ease the problem within the neck, like massages, chiropractor care and physical therapy. Spinal decompression and manipulation of the spine can ease the problem associated with the neck, hopefully relieving the headache pain at the same time.

Another popular treatment option that will often be included in a conservative care plan involves physical therapy using the trigger points within the myofascial muscle group. This is the muscle group contained within the face, head and neck, often the source of the headache condition known as tension headaches. These muscles can tighten and cramp as a reaction to stress, and massaging the trigger points at different positions along the temple, jaws and base of the neck can bring relief.

Are You A Candidate?

If you have suffered from chronic headaches in the past, that are not always relieved by medication or are simply interested in trying a treatment plan that does not rely on medication, then you may want to investigate whether a conservative care for headaches plan might be an option. Proper chiropractic care can not only alleviate your headaches but also help your overall health and posture.
