Knee Injury

A man clutches his knee after an injuryLeft untreated, a knee injury can put you out of commission for a long time. Sports accidents and auto injuries are two of the most common causes of knee injuries. Many knee injuries result in twisting and stretching of the ligaments in the knee. If the blow to the knee is severe, it can tear the ligament.

Another cause of pain in the knee can come from the muscles and tendons around the knee being hyper-extended from overuse causing severe and acute pain.

Knee injuries are graded on levels from one to three based on the damage that has been done to the ligament. An injury wherein the ligament is stretched but not torn is the least severe of the three and is classified as a grade one knee injury. The most severe are grade three injuries, which occur when the ligament is completely torn.

Any injury to the knee can have long term effects including pain and swelling brought on by inflammation around the knee joint. In some cases the pain may be intermittent and triggered off by a specific activity while in other cases it could be constant.

One activity that is likely to be especially painful is walking up and down the stairs. Whether the pain is worse walking up or walking down the stairs can indicate the exact type of knee injury you have. A meniscus injury will cause you more pain when you are walking up the stairs as the cartilage is pinched by the motion of bending your knee. Pain that occurs while you walk down your stairs indicates damage to the patella (kneecap) as it is being forced into the femur. It is a good idea to check with the physician if pain from walking up or down stairs does not subside after a few days.
